The goal of the UNDP-led Municipal Governance and Sustainable Development Programme is to promote participatory governance so as to improve living quality of the people in urban Ukraine.

MGSDP is a part of Local Development Programme (LDP) of UNDP/Ukraine.LDP is envisaged to serve as umbrella programme to promote self-sustained local development and democratic local governance in Ukraine by means of a community-based sustainable development model.

Using social mobilisation approach, the Programme promotes appropriate institutions of the local communities of citizens, academia, small businesses and civil society organisations in the selected municipalities. These institutions are founded on the principles of self-help and good governance. Through the Programme intervention, their institutional capacity is built such that they are able to plan, mobilise resources and undertake their priorities to solve their social, economic and environmental problems in a sustainable way that ultimately lead towards accomplishment of Ukrainian Millennium Development Goals. It happens with support from the respective city councils and other national/international development agencies. The city councils integrate communities’ plan in their own development agenda and contribute resources to implement such plans. The process of local sustainable development is bottom up in true sense. It moves from local level all the way up to national level.

City of Ternopil

During this trip you will have possibility to familiarize with system of education for sustainable development in city schools.

In Ternopil region created a network of educational institutions which systematically implement education for sustainable development. 54 schools took part in the program; including 9 schools which have educational development from 3d to 9th Grade.
 

The program of the visit:
* Lesson visit in elementary school "My Happy Planet"
* Meeting with pupils, studying the course "Lessons for Sustainable Development"
* Meeting with teachers who teach course "Lessons for Sustainable Development"
* Introduction of environmental design club
* Official meeting with Ternopil school program coordinators, educational administrators, interested teachers.

City of Donetsk

  • Price: by plane 275 Euro, by train 60 Euro

During this trip you will have possibility to familiarize with system of education for sustainable development in city schools.

Donetsk region has specific historical, cultural and economic situation. It is a center of mining and metal production, chemical industry.
Emissions ofenterprises in the city, concentrated on a relativelysmall space,togetherwith the enterprisesof Donetskoblastcause purple hazehangingover the entirecity very often. Water supplyalso is a veryserious problemfor Donetsk
Due to the violation of the hydrogeological regime in coal mining, flooding and waterlogging happened in about the third part of the urban area. In addition, in some areas there are caving gaps in the earth's surface.

Very urgent problem for Donetsk is the processing of solid industrial waste, hundreds of millions of tons of which for two centuries has been collected around the city.
With this in mind, the issue of natural resources and sustainable education for sustainable development is in he sphere of intermediate interest for this city.

Up to 400 teachers from 85 schools were trained over 2 years in Donetsk region within the framework of Ukrainian School program. Our course "Lessons for Sustainable Development" is learnt by 3500 pupils. The content and ideas of sustainable development principles are integrated into other school subjects and in extracurricular work.

Chernobyl

  • Price:  125-150 EUR (depending of group size)

Safety:
The irradiation level, which can be obtained in such a trip, several times less than received during medical X-ray radiography and radiation dose is approximately equal to a flight on a modern jet.

Itinerary: According to the version of magazine "Forbes" Chernobyl is the most exotic tourist object on the Earth.
Excursion to Chernobyl - not only the form of tourist extremism, but also travel on a bosom of the wild nature. Despite of more than 90 tons of the radioactive waste buried under a concrete sarcophagus, and the district infected by radiation on many kilometers around, the wild life in these places left by the person prospers. The thrown edge(territory), having turned to natural reserve, was filled with wolves, foxes, wild wild boars.

It starts from Kyiv at 9. a.m. Distance from Kiev to Chernobyl is 140 km.

Visit to the office of the Chernobylinterinform State Agency. Full and last information about the liquidation of the catastrophic consequences in the 30 km. zone, the most contagious places, machines cemeteries. Prognosis for the future.
Visit to 30 kilometres zone through Leliv block post. You will be impressed by the tidy revetment on the edges of the road, studded with yellow signs. These ramparts are places of conservation of radio-active garbage and of remainders from whole villages.

Photo-stop near the 4th reactor of the station. You will be 100 m. from the main closed object of the zone! A visit to the press centre (except weekends!) and a documentary film demonstrating the liquidation and liquidators of the man-caused catastrophe on the 4th reactor. Photo-gallery, model of the Station, little known first-hand information about the sarcophagus conditions nowadays.

You will be driven nearby a "red forest", which was left for scientific researches.
Extreme! A "ghost city" Prypyat. You will visit the flats, left in 1986 where private things still can be found: kitchen utensils, furniture, curtains, books, musical instruments, toys!! You will see the town that was left by its 50 thousand inhabitants within 24 hours. The spirit of Soviet times darkness reign here. You can make pictures of National Emblem of the Soviet Union and of Soviet Ukraine, slogans ‘Piece, Labor and May”, red-yellow public call-box and other objects that are symbols of the 80-s in the Soviet Union. Also you will visit the Central Park with big dipper.  They planned to open this big dipper up to 1 May 1986 (public holiday). This big dipper has never seen its visitors. Pripyat is similar to mummy. It has a body but it doesn’t have a soul. Ecologically safe dinner: You'll participate in the cooking and checking the products with a dosimeter. Visiting the town of Chernobyl: the Park of Glory, Second World War Memorial, the Board of Memory to liquidators, examples of machinery, which took part in liquidating the results of the accident.
